Risk management is not new in the public sector. It is the process for dealing with uncertainty within a public policy environment. It is an integral component of good management and decision-making at all levels. Given the strains on the system in the current environment, risk management is even more important now than in the past.

The delivery of public services is of course affected by the current staff and financial resource constraints. This seminar will assist public service managers to take necessary steps to ensure that risks are properly assessed, measured, monitored and managed taking account of the greater risks that prevail at present.

The seminar will address key issues such as:

•    Risk assessment, analysis and evaluation

•    Techniques of risk management, including the risk register

•    Risk measurement

•    The Mullarkey Requirements

•    Challenges implementing risk management

•    Case studies

While this is a complex subject area, the objective of this seminar is to demystify and simplify the concepts involved. By the end of this seminar, participants will:

•    Have a broad understanding of the Mullarkey Report and how it impacts them

•    Be familiar with an overall model for risk management in Government Departments

and State bodies

•    Understand the key challenges that typically arise in implementing risk management

•  Be aware of practical methods that can be used to improve the chances of successful risk management implementation

•    Know where to get additional information and assistance on risk management

•    Have a broad understanding of the Mullarkey Report and how it impacts them

Ultimately, the better that people are equipped to deal with risk management, the more likely it is that public sector programmes will be run efficiently, effectively and economically. This seminar is designed for all public servants, but particularly for section managers in all areas who now have to take account of heightened risk factors on a more systematic basis in a particularly challenging environment.

The tutors on this seminar are experts in risk management and have been advising public bodies in this field over recent years. They can be expected to bring a top-quality cutting-edge practical emphasis to the subject matter.
