Introduction

Writing for the web is very different from other types of writing – mainly because online readers access information differently. According to research, 79% of users scan the webpage instead of reading word for word and reading from computer screens is about 25% slower than reading from paper. This means that, ideally, web content should have 50% of the word count of its paper equivalent.

The course has been created in partnership between Public Affairs Ireland and Sarah Marriott of Plain English Ireland and aims to equip students with the skills, knowledge and competencies to be able to create effective written communications for the web.

Target Audience

This course will be of interest for anyone who writes for or edits online. Its content will apply to a wide range of people in the public and private sectors including the civil service, the health sector, state agencies, local authorities, libraries and archives, education, regulatory authorities, public services, representative bodies and associations, companies and professional services firms.
